Cheap Grandfather Clocks: A History of Affordable Grandfather Clocks

Time Keeping in the Early Days
Since the beginning of time, man has always searched for new ways and new methods of trying to make things easier for them. Since the start of civilization, humans have tried to find ways to be able to keep track of time. Even when watches or clocks did not exist, earlier people found ways to monitor the time that has passed, the days, the months, the years, and even the seasons that have come and gone. By carefully keeping watch of the position of the sun, they were able to make close estimations of the time. The careful study of the phases of the moon helps them determine the day, the month, and the season. It also prodded the creation of cheap grandfather clocks.
A Collaboration of Creators
With man’s ingenuity, they were able to discover that a pendulum could be used to record time. It was Galileo who first thought of the design of this antique clock but it was Christian Huygens who first made and built cheap grandfather clocks. William Clement also had his share of these pendulum clocks. He discovered that a longer pendulum works better than the cheap grandfather clocks that were built with a shorter pendulum. It meant having a taller clock with his new designs having such long-cases. Although they were not yet perfect and accurate, it somehow served as inspiration for the other inventors to come up with their own technology and perfect the design of a grandfather clock.
The Early Grandfather Clocks
The cheap grandfather clocks that were made in the fifteenth century up to the middle of the seventeenth century still do exist up to this time. Most of them that exist until now have been showcased in the museums, while a few still remain as part of private clock collections. And if you ever see one, you would not recognize that they were timekeepers during the 1500s to the 1700s. The antique clocks that were made during the eighteenth to nineteenth century were made in massive quantities. Although they were bought cheap during those days, their prices today are now pegged from $70,000 up to $100,000. That is definitely way more than what they were during centuries ago.
Soothing Chimes to Tell Time
Times have truly changed today. Today, you may have a different sound to wake you up each morning or something that will lull you to sleep. The alarm clocks may have that glowing light that features different colors and can even be programmed to play music to wake you up. This kind may have been invented not so very long ago but it has developed in so many ways. But nothing ever beats the relaxing sound of the chime of cheap grandfather clocks when it surrounds the entire house. It’s soothing, soft, and brings music to the ears. It is now called the antique clock and it is still treasured and enjoyed by other families.
